THE Works ministry has threatened to cut essential funding to the Kampala City Council (KCC) for the maintenance of city roads for failure to account for money earlier disbursed to it.

The funds are disbursed quarterly for the periodic maintenance and repair of roads under the Uganda Road Fund (URF).

Opening a URF budget workshop at the Imperial Royale Hotel yesterday, works and transport state minister John Byabagambi gave KCC a one-weeks ultimatum to submit accountability for the first three quarterly disbursements of over sh3b.

Byabagambi said whereas many agencies had in the past failed to account for the funds, KCC was notorious, failing to account for funds received over several years.

“Kampala City Council has received a substantial sum of sh15b per year for maintenance of city roads since 2006/07 but the condition remains deplorable,” the minister said.

Byabagambi’s remarks come hardly a fortnight after the mayor, Nasser Ntege Ssebagala, was quoted in the media as saying the council cannot afford to fix the roads because of little tax revenue and inadequate Government funding.
