THE contemporary style of gardening is increasingly becoming popular world wide and particularly in the United Kingdom; where it has become a huge success with the increase of modern buildings and homes.
In Uganda, we are seeing a mushrooming real estate and in the capital, a growth of office building in fantastic architectural designs. The theme focused on here is clean lines and minimisation of space. We are indeed into the times of less is more “Get it?†A saying the young use indiscriminately!!!
Focus is on hard landscaping materials such as stone, hard wood and rendered walls. Planting style is bold but simple with the use of drifts of one or two plants that are repeated through the design. Grasses are a very popular choice for this style of design. Lighting effects also play an integral role in the modern garden. Subtle lighting effects can be achieved with the use of carefully placed low voltage lights incorporated into paving and walls.
Steel designs and tinted windows all contribute to the modernism style. Dustbins, chairs, tables and plant containers will all be in steel. Next to look out for is the pattern that is created with the presentation of lined images.
These could be in décor form; art pieces on a wall, furniture in a studio, table mats on a table, name it; the items will be chosen with precision and placed meticulously. Carelessness here is not entertained. You may find a single waterfall as the centre piece in a garden which is hard landscaped with pebbles and fish in the water. Or it might be a water fountain also in the middle of the grounds.
