LOCAL artiste Moses Ssali, popularly known as Bebe Cool, told Nakawa Court on Friday that the policeman who shot him in January wanted him dead to destroy evidence.

He was testifying against Alfred Achikane, the special Police constable, who is facing five counts of attempted murder.

Bebe Cool, 32, was shot four times on the thighs and now moves on crutches. He has undergone a series of reconstructive surgery.

“He wanted me dead so that he could destroy the evidence that would be brought against him. That is why he kept on following me even after I had moved away,” Bebe Cool said.

The case is before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate, Deo Ssejjemba. Achikane is represented by Lydia Mugisha, while the prosecutor is Jackie Kyasiimire.

The musician and his three bodyguards were shot on January 30 this year at Nakumatt Supermarket on Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala in the wee hours of the morning.

The bodyguards are Abbas Kabyobyo, Allan Masengere, and Godfrey Kayiza. Also injured in the shooting was another Police constable, David Oluka, who sustained an injury on the right leg.

Bebe Cool also said Achikane was drunk at the time of the shooting, saying he shot at them even after seeing that they were unarmed.

He told court that Achikane shouted at them, calling them bayaye (lumpens) before ordering them to leave the parking lot.

The musician said he identified himself to Achikane, adding that he and his entourage did not insult Achikane to provoke him into shooting.

But Mugisha said Bebe Cool and his group provoked Achikane into shooting at them, adding that they attempted to disarm him.

She wondered why Bebe Cool, who he said is a law-abiding citizen, did not “leave the scene after being ordered to”.
Earlier, Kabyobyo testified that Achikane shot him as he lay on the ground, saying his intention was to “finish them off.

The case was adjourned to August 13 for further hearing.
