BRIG. Ali Fadhul’s life is hanging in the balance. He is suffering from diabetes, skin cancer, stomach ulcers and hypertension and cannot sit, eat or walk on his own.
Fadhul was the commander of the Simba Mechanised Reconnaissance Specialist Regiment, a military unit then based in Mbarara from 1971-1974.
However, tables turned on him when he was accused of masterminding the murder of the Ankole administrative secretary, Francis Tibayungwa, after the 1972 attack on the Simba barracks.
Yoweri Museveni, who was one of the key commanders in the attack, is said to have escaped to Tanzania with Tibayungwa’s help.
According to newspapers produced on September 21, 1972, Fadhul ordered Tibayungwa’s murder.
He was jailed in 1980 for crimes ranging from kidnap to murder committed during the Amin regime.
Fadhul received a presidential pardon last year, saving him from the gallows. His lifeline is an insulin injection, which he receives from Nsambya Hospital.
“We take him to the hospital daily because it is expensive to keep him there or to hire doctors to treat him at home,†said Faisal Fadhul, his son.
“I’m appealing to the Government to come to our father’s rescue,†he added.
