Binaisa death: Tomorrow is public holiday

THE Government has declared tomorrow, the day for the burial of former president, Godfrey Lukongwa Binaisa, a public holiday.

THE Government has declared tomorrow, the day for the burial of former president, Godfrey Lukongwa Binaisa, a public holiday.
The announcement was made yesterday by the information and national guidance minister, Kabakumba Masiko.
She also said Binaisa would be laid to rest at Nateete Church, the same place where his father, Can. Binaisa, was buried. This has ended days of speculation about Binaisa’s final resting place.
Masiko was briefing journalists after she, the Second Deputy Prime Minister, Muganwa Kajura, the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Sekandi and the Leader of Opposition, Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo, received Binaisa’s body at Parliament, where it lies in state.
The family, according to the deceased’ lawyer, Erias Lukwago, wanted Binaisa to be buried at Kololo independence grounds, where two decorated heroes, former President, Yusuf Kironde Lule and Ignatius Musaazi, are buried. Musaazi founded the first national political party, the Uganda National Congress in 1952.
However, some leaders of the clan to which Binaisa belonged had wanted him buried at his ancestral home in Namusera on the Kampala-Hoima road. Binaisa died last week in his sleep at his home in Makindye.
Today morning, the general public will view the body and sign the condolence book.
In the afternoon, Parliament will hold a special sitting for the executive and MPs to pay tribute to the fallen former president. At 4:30pm, the body will leave Parliament for his residence at Makindye, Masiko said.
On Wednesday, a state funeral service will be held at Namirembe Cathedral, starting 10:00am, after which the body will be taken to Nateete for burial.
