WORLD soccer governing body FIFA has cautioned FUFA to ensure that it remains the sole football controlling authority in Uganda. In an August 17 letter to FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa, FIFA snubbed a group led by former FUFA official Godfrey Kwizera that claims to have reconstituted the federation.

“As you know, FIFA recognises only one football controlling authority by country and for Uganda, it is FUFA. FIFA clearly recognised the results of the elections of November 2009 in which you (Mulindwa) were re-elected as president. These elections were observed by a FIFA representative,” wrote FIFA deputy secretary Markus Kattner in a letter copied to CAF general secretary Mustapha Fahmy.

FIFA’s communication included an August 12 letter from Kwizera. It lists the group’s executive and also accuses the Mulindwa led federation of lack of a properly constituted executive.

Mulindwa told a weekly FUFA press conference yesterday that Saturday’s general assembly would decide what action to take against Kwizera.

Displaying Kwizera’s letter that was strangely on FUFA’s official letter head, Mulindwa described the group’s actions as criminal. “It’s like someone waking up one day and declaring that he is Uganda’s head of state when President Yoweri Museveni is still in charge.”

The ex-international football association yesterday distanced itself from the group. “True, some of our members like Polly Ouma, Dan Ntale and Patrick Ntege are on their executive, but our association is not part of their actions,” said Abdallah Mubiru.

Mubiru revealed that the association would consider withdrawing Ntege as its representative to the FUFA assembly.
