THE Police in Mukono district were on Monday morning involved in running battles with a mob in Kiwanga village, Goma sub-county that went on rampage and torched their colleague’s residence and five rental houses.
The mob accused Anthony Musoke, whose houses were burnt, of being involved in the recent murder of Mustafa Ssali, 16, a bodaboda cyclist in the village.
Ssali’s beheaded body was discovered lying in a thicket. The Police said Ssali’s killers later took off with his motorcycle, a Bajaj Boxer, registration number UDP 619N. Ssali was Musoke’s tenant.
Chaos started on Sunday night when the area LC officials and Police went to search Musoke’s house and discovered a blood-stained shirt, a reflector jacket and a helmet believed to be Ssali’s.
Musoke reportedly denied having been involved in the murder. He told the Police that the shirt had got stained recently as he was being circumcised.Â
The Seeta Police boss, Apollo Kyangungu, said they had arrested Musoke and detained him at Seeta Police Station. However, the angry mob torched his houses after larning about his arrest and his alleged involvement in the murder.
Kyangungu said by the time the Police returned to the scene on Monday morning, nothing in the houses could be saved.
Police fired into the air to disperse the mob, but not even that saved much. “We only rescued Musoke’s wife and children whose lives were in danger,†Kyangungu said.
A Police officer only identified as Mambonga sustained a fractured leg in the fracas.
