A 23-year-old man yesterday plunged to the ground from the fifth floor of Mulago Hospital main building and died instantly. Witnesses said Mzee Eddie had been roaming the hospital corridors. “He looked frustrated,” one observed.

“I saw him at around 2:00am and I thought he was attending to some patient here. Later, he sat on the bench but looked frustrated,” a casual worker at the hospital said.

Rachael Nabiira, a student of Kyambogo University, who was nursing a relative, said the man was discharged from the hospital last month.

“When I heard that someone had committed suicide, I went to the scene and saw the man who had in August used my telephone to call a relative. The day before he was discharged, he asked me for sh2,000 for transport.

“He often talked of a rich brother who lived in Kiboga,” Nabiira explained.

The Police, who arrived at the scene at 5:00am, said the tragedy could have happened at 4:00am. The body was taken to the city mortuary.

The officer in charge of Wandengeya Police Station, Martin Okoyo, said before he jumped to his death, Eddie wrapped a cloth around his eyes and removed his shoes.

“These indicate intentions of committing suicide. Covering his face means he didn’t want to jump while seeing.”

He added that most people use the building as an easy spot to commit suicide. He said that last year, three people committed suicide from the same place.
