According to the Joint Admissions Board guidelines, biology and chemistry are the two essential subjects for the bachelor of medicine and surgery both at Makerere and Mbarara universities. They are multiplied by three when calculating the cutoff points. Since the minimum entry requirement is two principal passes, you can qualify for admission if you passed those two subjects. However, you may fail to go through in case the competition is stiff. This is because in your combination, you lack mathematics and physics which are considered the relevant subjects for medicine and multiplied by two when calculating the cut off points.

I am a Senior Six student preparing for my final examinations. I am taking physics, economics, mathematics and French. I have heard my friends talk about actuarial science and I think it is a good course. However, I neither know what it is nor understand the career opportunities in the field. Does my subject combination qualify me to pursue this programme? Please help.

Actuarial science is offered at the Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics, Makerere University. According to Dyson Maswere, a lecturer at the institute, the course trains students to apply mathematical and statistical methods to manage financial risk in various areas of business. They gain skills in analysing past business events, assess the risks involved, and model what could happen in the future. To qualify for admission, one must have passed pure mathematics at A’ level with at least grade C.

I scored O in history, O in economics, O in divinity and C in entrepreneurship. Which course can I do at university?
Sylvia

You can hardly be admitted for any course since you did not score two principal passes, the minimum points required for admission through the direct entry programme, the assistant director of the national council for higher education, Phenny Birungi says. However, you could apply for admission through the mature age entry scheme if you are 25 and above. Alternatively, you can choose to begin with a certificate and upgrade to a diploma and later a degree.

I scored ODOD in history, economics, geography, and entrepreneurship respectively and C5 in general paper. Can I be admitted as a private student for bachelor of business administration at Makerere University or Gulu University? Please tell me the requirements of this course.
John

Moses Ekwang, a registrar at Makerere University, says economics is the essential subject for admission of bachelor of business administration. One better done of the remaining A’ level subjects is also considered as the second essential subject. Since you scored two principal passes, with one in economics, it means you are eligible for admission.
Gulu University, however, requires a student to have passed economics and either mathematics, physics or geography to qualify for business administration.
