DEOGRACIOUS Munguriek (FDC), who lost to Mavenjina Akumu (NRM) in 2006 for the Nebbi district Woman MP, is gearing up for the battle again. She claims she was cheated then and thinks she will win this time.

Akumu defeated her in Okoro County, which now makes up the current Zombo district. As a result, Munguriek, a teacher by profession, has embarked on massive mobilisation.

Munguriek says she wants to offer good representation. “There is a leadership vacuum in Nebbi district. We have had women representatives at all levels but their presence is not felt,” she points out.

She promises to tackle the issues of health, hygiene and sanitation in the rural areas to minimise the outbreaks of diseases like cholera and plague that have hit Nebbi.

“The education standards in Nebbi schools are wanting and need to be addressed. Our children at primary and secondary levels score poor grades in national exams.”

Munguriek will tussle it out with another teacher, Christine Acayo Cwinya-Ai, the official NRM flag bearer for Nebbi.

Acayo graduated from Makerere University in 1993 before pursuing her Masters in education planning and management at the same university.

“I pledge to offer the people of Nebbi good leadership. Lies, hatred and intrigue cannot give us hope. The district needs politicians like me who are forward-looking, can unite people, and heal society instead of creating fresh wounds.”

“We must all work together to fight ignorance, poverty and disease, which are the problems of Nebbi other than fighting one another,” Acayo notes.

Some of the challenges she faces include opposition from some of the NRM members. She claims some people have drawn a list of people to support in the elections.

“I did not feature in their line up and would have failed. I told the electorates it was the mandate of the people to elect a flag bearer,” Acayo discloses.

Both Acayo and Munguriek command a sizeable support in Jonam and Padyere counties. Acayo comes from Jonam while Munguriek hails from Padyere County.

Munguriek’s other advantage is that Padyere has a higher population than Jonam county.
