THERE is no serious security battle between the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the security forces that Sam Mugumya has not fought.

Mugumya, who is a personal assistant to Col. Kizza Besigye, the FDC leader, has swallowed more teargas than his boss.

Whenever there is a violent demonstration, Mugumya sits on Besigye’s car such that before a stone or a bullet reaches Besigye, it hits him first.

Many times, especially during the riots, Mugumya has faced the wrath of the Police. But he appears very determined to protect his both even if it means losing his life.

He is one of the FDC youth who have been in and out of jail whenever there are demonstrations in the city.

One day he was flogged but he held on to Besigye’s car until the Police decided to arrest him.

Mugumya fell in love with Besigye in 2001. Those who were at Makerere University with him say he was very vocal in the students’ politics.

Before he met with Besigye, he was a strong critic of Museveni.

Mugumya was born in Rukungiri district like Besigye and grew up in Rukungiri town. He had never shown interest in any political seat until recently when he declared his intentions to vie for the Rukungiri Municipality MP seat.

Although he is new in the Rukungiri’s politics, Mugumya has gained fame in the municipality and with the backing of Besigye, he is likely to get many votes.
