EDITOR: It has been reported that the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) had suspended sport hunting out of concern about "dwindling numbers of wild animals in the wildlife reserves".

Unfortunately the report does not provide any data supporting or criticising the ban or context about the role of trophy hunting in wildlife conservation.

The press should help dispel the implication that trophy hunting cannot be a component of successful wildlife conservation. There are many examples near and far of hunting being used to save our wildlife. For instance, one of the reasons Selous National Park in Tanzania is the gem that it is, is managed hunting. Therefore, some context should have been added to your report. If it is true that investors have been abusing their concessions, then you should ask UWA how exactly they have been doing that.

If UWA is saying that hunting does not work, then you should ask them to substantiate that claim, given the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

If you do not do this, then we all risk being duped by headline lovers within UWA, especially given the current clamouring over the new board.
