UPCOMING distance runner Stephen Kiprotich led the way as Uganda won the Africa Mountain Running title in River State, Nigeria.

Uganda shrugged off stiff challenge from Ethiopia and Kenya, despite the two having big names on their start list, to take the continental title by a single point.

The top three Ugandans in Kiprotich (4th), Geoffrey Kusuro (5th) and Martin Toroitich (9th) saw Uganda have an over all point score of 16 points ahead of Kenya (silver) and Ethiopia (bronze) who both tied at 17 points. Host Nigeria was fourth ahead of Cameroon.

Kiprotich clocked 43 minutes 23 seconds in the 12km race at the famous Obudu Cattle Park on Saturday.

Ethiopian Abebe Dinkesa beat counterpart Fikadu Awash to defend the continental title in the competition that attracted over 150 runners from seven nations.

River State is bidding to host the 29th World running championships in 2014.
