NETBALL: 2010 YEAR REVIEW

THE 2010 season has been an incredible historical year for giants National Insurance Corporation (NIC) as the longtime recurrent champions retained the trophy.

The 14 time champions had a smooth run allover the season loosing none of their games not even to rivals Prisions.

They swept all their 16 league games with the help of their goal attackers and strikers Florence Apako, Harriet Layet, Aisha Namayanja and Peace Proscovia whose efforts kept the clubs’ name highlighted at the top of the table to seal the
season with 32points.

But despite the consistency, NIC almost surrendered the title to the second placed Luzira side Prisons for having used two pregnant players in some of their games which contravenes with Act 1, section 3 of the rules governing netball.

It says “Any club that uses expecting players automatically lose their points to the oppossing team” But because no petitions were filed by any club with in 48 hours after the league had ended as stipulated this automatically left NIC
as champions.

National Netball Rally

NIC continued their glory and reclaimed the national netball rally title held in Kasese. They beat KCC 18-11 in their final game to retain the trophy.

While in schools, St Mary’s Kitende (A) met with Kitende (B) thumping them 30-22 to retain the girl’s title at the two-day tournament as Budo SS also snatched the boys crown beating Kisozi High School.

Regional championships

NIC made another stride as the Ugandan side confirmed her status as a netball powerhouse at the 15th edition of the East African netball club championships in Nairobi.

The week-long event that ended at Nyayo stadium saw the insurance ladies beat fellow Ugandan side Prisons 55-38 in the final of the regional club event to recapture the title they had surrendered to Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JKT) of Tanzania in Zanzibar in 2009.

Prisons also had a day to rejoice as they achieved their career best when they reached the final for the first time, to better their 2006 performance in Nairobi when they stopped at the semi-finals.

But it was a sad moment for the Kenyan side after they failed to have a team among the last four in the women’s category confirming that the country has a long way to march Kenya Prisons who won the inaugural event in 1996, the only time a Kenyan team has claimed the title.

Disappointing moments:

In September the Uganda national side was dumped out of an international event at the Africa world cup qualifiers for having arrived late in Johannesburg, South Africa.

After spending close to shs71million, the ladies looked more like tourists having to watch others play.

Three days in South Africa, the she cranes never had a test of any games not even a friendly action.

“Actually it wasn’t our problem but we believe the organisers just never wanted us to take part because they were afraid of loosing ranking after we showed them what the Ugandan style is like when we met at the club games” head coach Margaret Bisereko explained.

Uganda expectations were high having beaten South Africa 33-32 at the continental club games that were held in Nairobi, Kenya towards the end of last year to enter the probation ranking list.

Merry Christmas!
