AT least eight patients have undergone open-heart surgery at the International Hospital Kampala (IHK).
The 10-day operations were conducted by a joint team of doctors and nurses from the United Kingdom and IHK.
Hwan Sung Medical Charity Services sponsored the over sh160m exercise.
“I feel happy to help disadvantaged people because it makes my life more meaningful,†Kim Sung-Hwan, the Hwan Sung Group of Companies chairman, said during a press conference at the hospital. He had gone to visit the patients who had been operated on.
The beneficiaries included John Achebe, 30, Ester Ninshaba, 6, Marvin Kayita, 17, Monica Nabbaale, 13, Albert Atukunda, 16, Sandra Ajwanga, 15, Winfred Ahabwe, 16 and Habiba Namono, 17.
Kim pledged to continue sponsoring disadvantaged people with heart complications for free operations.
Ten patients were still undergoing operations and others were waiting to be discharged from the Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago Hospital, Kim said.
The next operations are scheduled between March and April next year.
Ian Clarke, the hospital chairman, said there were several heart patients in need of surgery but had not yet got sponsorship. He thanked the Hwan Sung group for the help.
Clarke advised the Government to stop taking patients for very expensive operations abroad, saying they can be done in Uganda with the help of foreign experts at cheaper costs.
He added that this would also boost the skills of local surgeons.
