THE ruthless hand of death has once again struck the family of the former head of state, the late Gen. Tito Okello Lutwa, this time claiming Lutwa’s senior widow, Yasinta Akun Okello, writes

Akun, 71, died on New Year’s Day in Kitgum Government Hospital after a long battle with coronary heart disease.

Lutwa’s junior widow, Esther Dyee, died in March last year following in a tragic road at Kitgum Matidi, 14km east of Kitgum town, as she was travelling to Namokora, their ancestral home, to attend the last funeral rites of her late husband.

Lutwa died in June 1996, three years after returning from exile in Tanzania. State minister for sports, Henry Oryem, who is also MP for Chua and Lutwa’s heir, said burial took place in Kitgum mission cemetery yesterday.

Oryem described his late stepmother as “a real mother who treated us as her own children and we treated her as our own mother.”

Akun left behind children and many grandchildren.
