THE Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) on Monday night flushed the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) out of Otwal village, Oyam North in Lira district and rescued at least 16 captives. The rebels killed one civilian.

The UPDF spokesman based in northern Uganda, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said 14 other captives were rescued on Sunday night in Pabbo sub-county, Kilak county.

Ankunda said the captives were rescued from the parishes of Pawel and Parabongo when the UPDF attacked a rebel group which had abducted six people from Pabbo displaced people’s camp on Saturday night.

Local security sources said the rebels struck hardly 50 metres from the UPDF soldiers who were guarding the camp that night.

Some camp residents said yesterday that, “The rebels looted essential items and fled without the army responding immediately. They (army) only started reacting in the morning when the rebels had disappeared into the bush.”

Ankunda said 28 LRA rebels had either surrendered or had been captured by the UPDF since January 2.

Seven captives were rescued at Oleng, about 56km in Odek sub-county in Omoro county on the Gulu-Moroto road.

He said this brings the total to 37 people freed from captivity in northern Uganda since Sunday, and to 3,338 since June 2002.
