IN its old age St. Peter’s College Tororo has suffered the wrath of indisciplined students and the negligence of a poor and weak administration.
The Old boys of the College have intervened through a fundraising drive to help the new administration pick up the pieces.
The new headteacher, Camayi Bule attended the meeting. It is expected that the money will be used to repair vandalised dormitories, utility facilities and boost the morale of staff.
The 61-year-old school is just recovering from a violent strike that took place in the year 2000. Students damaged infrastructure including the headteacher’s residence.
Bule said the school needs at least sh200m for just the dining hall and science laboratory.
He, however, said that the biggest problem of Tororo College is not structures but the “attitude” of the students.
He said that when he took over the school in 2001 he met a tough challenge controlling the students because they had adopted a “culture of doing things which are not acceptable.”
Bule suggested that the old boys who should keep retreating to the Eastern region College and give the students inspiring role model lectures.
“These boys need role models who can inspire them to be responsible people. I urge you to keep visiting them. It will help,” Bule said.
But one of the old boys Dr. George Baguma told Bule that instilling discipline in the students was principally his duty not for the old boys.
Baguma told Bule that if he could not handle maintaining discipline in the school he should leave.
Another old boy Dr. Peter Emudek suggested that the administration should keep intake to the school static so as to control student discipline and re-organise the school.
Baguma went on to pledge to roof the planned science laboratory.
The fundraising drive is called “Save the Palm tree initiative” led by leading former Old Boy of the school Wilbrod Owor. The Palm tree is the schools’ emblem.
“This is one of the biggest schools in the east with thousands of old boys all over the country. But the school is now in ruins and it’s our challenge to revive it to its past glory.”Owor, former Guild President of Makerere University, 1989-90 said.
Owor said that the fundraising drive will also be supported by old boys in the Diaspora through the school’s a new Website;tororo college.hypermart.net which is administered by an old boy in Canada.
The old boys’ association which is set to be legalised in February 2003 is chaired by Professor Andrew Otime.
Prominent old boys of the school include president Museveni’s legal and media aides Fox Odoi and Onapito Ekomoloit respectively.
Other old boys are the Monitor’s Charles Onyango Obbo, ambassador Prof.Oboth Ofumbi and Martinez Mangusho of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Ends
