Boniface Kiprop (top) boosted his World Cross-country preparations by finishing second at the prestigious Cinque Mulini race in Italy on Sunday.
Kiprop was edged at the tape by Ukraine’s reigning triple European cross-country champion Sergiy Lebid in a photo finish that had both runners clocking 35 minutes and 20 seconds in the 12-kilometer race.
The event, used as a final dress rehearsal to this year’s World Cross-country in Lausanne, Switzerland inexplicably had Dorcus Inzikuru missing in the women’s 6km event. Inzikuru had been listed among the starters.
Lebid battled neck-to-neck with Kiprop in the last lap but eventually proved a better sprinter in the final meter of a race that annually draws the cream of long distance running. Prominent in the classy field that fell in Kiprop’s wake was Kenyan champion John Korir who finished fourth.
Kiprop’s thirst for the top positions was shown early. In the first two laps, he was at the heels of pacesetters Giovanni Gualdi and Gabriele Nard.
“It is thrilling. Kiprop has again made a point that he is among the world’s best,” said Kiprop’s manager Godfrey Nuwagaba.
