CAO to stand
MBALE – The chief administrative officer, George W. Wopuwa, recently said he would contest in the Bubulo East parliamentary by-elections. The seat fell vacant after the High Court and Court of Appeal annulled the election of Michael Mumiya for lack of academic qualifications.

Driver in
JINJA – A taxi driver appeared before the Grade One Magistrate Vicent Mugabo and was charged with theft of a spare tyre worth shs190,000 from a stationary vehicle. Prosecution said Siraji Bogere, 39, committed the offence during the night on March 18, at Caltex Petrol Station.

Thief jailed
JINJA – A man who confessed before court that he stole two pit-latrine slabs worth sh140,000 was recently sentenced to 16- months in jail. The Grade One Magistrate, Patrick Mbangire, committed Johnson Akatuhebwa, 38, to Kirinya Prison.

NUSAF gets
KAMPALA – The Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) has received $100m from the World Bank to ensure that communities in the north catch up with the rest of the country. NUSAF executive director, Fred Opio, said the Government would contribute $13.35m while districts will contribute $20. Ends
