14 Die In Matugga Accident

FOURTEEN people died on the spot in an accident yesterday afternoon, when a city bound commuter minibus UAB 181A, from Bweyale in Masindi collided with a Isuzu tipper lorry UAD 813N at Matugga, about 16Km on the Kampala -Gulu highway.

FOURTEEN people died on the spot in an accident yesterday afternoon, when a city bound commuter minibus UAB 181A, from Bweyale in Masindi collided with a Isuzu tipper lorry UAD 813N at Matugga, about 16Km on the Kampala -Gulu highway.

The accident occurred at 1.30 pm. The dead were all in the taxi. The sloping stretch of the highway immediately after Matugga trading centre has been declared a black spot by police.

The busy traffic police officers at the scene could not immediately identify the victims.
But the dead included nine males and five females.

Pieces of human fresh and spilt brains littered the scene.

The injured were rushing to Mulago hospital with broken limbs and deep cuts.
Hundreds of people jammed the blood stained scene as the police frantically struggled to remove the bodies of the victims which, for over two hours, remained trapped in the taxi wreckage.

Grief stricken onlookers were moved to tears as mangled bodies were being cut out of the wreckage.

Police officers at the scene said the driver of the Isuzu lorry which was coming from the direction of Kampala, tried to avoid knocking a lunatic but rammed into the oncoming taxi.

The body of the taxi driver only identified by his nickname of ‘full damage’ and that of unidentified women, remained in the wreckage, despite frantic efforts by to remove them. The team was later joined by the fire Brigade who arrived an hour after the accident.
