He wanted to be a priest, but never thought of becoming anything beyond this vocation in the religious circles. He always looked at himself as inferior to hold any higher position and a discussion on any likely possibility appeared far-fetched.
Now, the master of all surprises has hit him in the face. He is to be consecrated third catholic bishop of Kabale diocese. He was confirmed by Pope John Paul II on March 15, 2003.
Rev. Fr. Callist Rubaramira was born to Cyprion Kwigira and the late Mzee Seforoza Bamusibane on February 8, 1950 in Rubira, Rushoroza parish, Kabale District.
He is second born in the family of six boys and three girls.
Since his childhood, he has never left the church gates. All his education has been in religious institutions like St. Francis Kyanamira, where he completed his primary education. He joined St. Paul’s seminary, Mutolere for his O’ level and Kitabi seminary in Bushenyi, where he completed his A’ Level. Katigondo and Ggaba Major seminaries were his gateway to officially being ordained a Deacon on December 29, 1974 and a priest in 1975 at Rushoroza. He holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the university of Portland, Oregon USA.
Rubaramira demonstrated to his parents that his life was with Jesus since childhood and joined the alter boys association.
His mother, Kwigira says Rubaramira one time answered with determination, that “ninyenda kuba Faza,†(I want to be a priest) when asked by his father what he wanted to be in future. Since then, he has lived to his word.
Now, God has rewarded him with a precious token. He is to be ordained thisJune by Cardinal Crescensio Sepe, the Pope’s representative.
Asked about how he feels now that he looks forward to his ordination, the ever jolly Rubaramira said, “I can’t describe my joy, all I am doing is pray, pray and pray to God, to thank him for what he has done and ask him to guide me as he did to Moses, Joseph and Abraham.â€
“This is something I didn’t expect in my life,†he continues, “It is actually a miracle.â€
Rubaramira who was at his new home in Kahondo village Fort Portal diocese, where he lives with his family, says he knows the challenges of being a bishop and is ready to work with the priests and Christians.
Love for the vocation, runs through his family. Rubaramira’s brother Louis Turyamureeba and his nephew Athanasio Ahurwendere are both priests and two of his nephews are in seminaries. The family also has a nun.
He has held various posts in the diocese.
He has served as a parish priest and Episcopal vicar in Rukungiri, a bishop’s secretary, chancellor, diocesan treasurer and diocesan financial administrator, a post he has held until now.
