About 16 Bakiga suspects who allegedly participated in the tribal clashes which left three people dead in Kibaale district were on Monday charged and remanded in Isunga Government Prison.

The regional Police commander Midwestern, Grace Turyagumanwe, said the suspects appeared before the Kibaale Grace One Magistrate and denied the charges.

He said the charges ranged from attempted murder, inciting violence and assault.

State minister for lands Baguma Isoke blamed the clashes on the district resident district commissioner, Patrick Baliddawa.

Isoke said Baliddawa was informed of the clashes in advance.

Over 10 huts were recently set ablaze and several domestic animals killed in Kihemba village, Kyanaisoke sub-county, during the clashes between the Banyoro and the Bakiga.

The land clashes followed the death of Stephen Ndabiraho, who was allegedly killed by suspected Bakiga.

Ndabiraho was the fourth victim in the tribal clashes which erupted two weeks ago.

Turyagumanawe told The New Vision that the situation had been controlled.

During Ndabiraho's burial, mourners wrote placards and positioned them on several routes leading to the burial ground reading, “No policeman or Mukiga should attend this burial.”

Balidawa was not available for his comment.
