THE parliamentary appointments committee on Tuesday approved Dr. Johnson Byabashaija as the new Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons.

He immediately said he was against the death penalty.

The committee chaired by the Speaker of Parliament unanimously approved the veterinary doctor of 19 years in the prisons service after a two-hour interview with Nusura Tiperu (Yumbe Woman MP) as lead counsel.

The President nominated Byabashaija in June, to replace the Deputy Commissioner General Vigil Okurut, who retired.

Joseph Etima, the Commissioner General of Prisons, is serving on contract.

A source at the committee said Byabashaija exhibited confidence during the interview.
“He was very organised, articulate, smart and interesting and we made a unanimous decision that he was the right man for the job,” an MP said.

Byabashaija declared he was against the death sentence because it was dehumanising and the officers who executed the sentence were also tortured psychologically.
