INDIA plans to develop an HIV/AIDS vaccine to prevent the spread of the scourge, reports Geoffrey Kamali.

The Indian High Commissioner, Deepak Ray, said this at a flag-hoisting ceremony to mark India’s 56th Independence Day on Thursday.

The plan is among several others, announced by the Indian President, APJ Abdul Kalam, in his Independence Day message for 2003.

Other plans include increasing food production through its Second Green Revolution and accelerating the manufacturing process through large-scale industries.

The President said India had developed its development plan, called India 2020 vision to consolidate its economic gains.

“We should reinforce our gains in the agriculture, power, information and communication technology, industrial and education sectors, space, nuclear and defence technologies…” he said.

The colourful ceremony with garlands of flowers was held at the Indian High Commission offices in Kampala.
