He’s given away two daughters - Natasha and Patience and a son, Muhoozi. But last Saturday in Rwakitura, President Yoweri Museveni was not giving anybody away. Rather, he was there to see his half brother, Nowomugisha Nzeire Kaguta walk down the aisle with Hope Mwesigye at St. Emmanuel Cathedral in Rushere.

The service, which was due to start at 1:00pm did not exactly start on time because there was one guest who had yet to turn up - President Museveni who was still in Teso. Eventually when word reached the organisers that he would not make the church service, things started to move almost three hours after the scheduled time but a terrific speed.

The reception was held in the grounds of Rwakitura and the set up was splendid. Museveni who had flown in an hour earlier, emerged from his house in army fatigues which caused a low murmur. He sat alongside his father, Amos.

Apart from the local dance troops, the singer Kawesa too entertained guests with three songs. While it was hard for me to get the gist of what was being said, for the speeches were made in Kinyankole, what I do know is that the new couple got an impressive number of cows to their name, including ten from the president.

Most of the speeches were lengthy but witty - especially that of the groom and the president. Nowomugisha in his speech wondered why Museveni had turned up in battle fatigues. “I thought you were annoyed when I saw you wearing your army uniform, but when I heard you were coming from duty I relaxed!” he said to a bout of laughter.

He also went on to reveal some tit bits about growing up with his brothers especially with Museveni. “When we were growing up, they never used to listen to me whenever I had something to say. Today is my chance to talk and they all have to listen” which brought a smile to Museveni’s face.

When it was Museveni’s turn to speak, he said something, which has been a long time in coming. “Weddings are weddings. The speeches are too long and too many people want to speak!” Like Nowomugisha he talked about the days when they were kids including a time when his father Amos Kaguta took on a second wife.

With laughter he said, “I was part of the committee that went to pick up my step mother-to-be. A few days before that, my mother kept on asking me to sabotage proceedings, but I told her I cannot do that!”
