Over 60 graduated tax defaulters were on Thursday arrested in Masindi town council during an operation by the council law enforcement officers reports Martin Kaahwa.

The operation also targeted idlers and schoolchildren spending class hours in video halls.

The head of the law enforcement unit, Enock Kyahurwa, said an Indian student Norman Talmil was among those arrested during the operation near Masindi Police Station. He was, however, released three hours later after he explained that he was student of Atzel College in India.

“My officers arrested him because they failed to understand him, but when they brought him here I released him, because he had valid traveller’s documents,” Kyahurwa said.

Talmil told The New Vision he was annoyed for being arrested yet he knew nothing about payment of graduated tax.

“These men are bad. They arrested me in the morning and I cannot now reach Kampala in time. May be they don’t know English because they took long to understand my explanation.” Talmil said.

Meanwhile, the council chairman, Sam Kiiza Musinguzi, recently warned video operators in the town against allowing schoolchildren in the halls.
