BUJUMBURA, Sunday - Burundi President Domitien Ndayizeye is to meet rebel leader Pierre Nkurunziza in the Ugandan capital Kampala today, ahead of a regional summit on their war-torn country next Sunday, a rebel official said Sunday.

“We are going to Kampala for a one-on-one meeting” between the president and rebel chief, the secretary general of the rebel Forces for the Defence of Democracy (FDD), Hussein Radjabue, said from Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian economic capital where the regional summit will be held.

Late Saturday the Burundi presidency said a meeting between the government and the FDD would take place Tuesday in Kampala, but failed to say who would take part.

The talks will once again focus on the practical implementation of a ceasefire the government and the FDD signed in December 2002 but which remained ineffective.

The latest talks, also between the president and the FDD leader, took place in South Africa.
