THE Police have arrested a suspected mastermind behind the counterfeiting of currency and other key government documents in the city.

John Bosco Kiza, of Nabutiti zone, Kansanga, a city suburb, was picked when the Police, working on a tip off, stormed shop number three on Mirembe shopping arcade along Nasser Road during a cordon and search operation on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old man was flushed out in the raid in which the Police seized his “XCESS” computer and a dozen forged documents of the Government and other institutions. He would charge sh150,000 for a job.

Also seized in the intense operation in the area considered a printing hub in the city, was a computer diskette which the Police said contained four files of forged sh10,000 denomination notes, ready for printing.

“We had information that there was lot of printing of fake currency and other government documents in the shop. Most of the documents are generated on computer,” Police spokesman Assuman Mugenyi, said at the Central Police Station (CPS) yesterday where he paraded Kiiza before reporters.

Police swooped on the shop just moments after a Kiiza had dispatched consignment of fake currency. Most of the fake money is circulated in the rural areas which has resulted in both cattle traders and farmers, being ripped off because they can easily detect the forged currency, Mugenyi said.

He displayed heaps of forged documents that included both “O” and “A” level results slips, government, Kampala City Council and Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Ltd., (UEDCL) general receipts at the press conference, attended by Deputy Kampala Police chief, Henry Tukahirwa.

Also displayed where forged diplomas of UCC, Aduku, transcripts of Makerere University and forged stamps of the academic registrar’s office, Makerere University.
Police said he is believed to be part of a bigger group.
