ATHLETICS tourist Teddy Sondota has been stopped from joining the athletics team in Abuja.

US-based Sondota (decathlon and sprints) was to have arrived in Abuja today along with sprinter Veronica Wabukawo. NCS has asked him not to travel because he was not entered for the 8th All Africa Games athletics competition that starts on Saturday and little is known of his recent performances.

Sondota, who also made it to the last All Africa Games in Johannesburg but failed to participate, sent a fax message last week indicating he would arrive in Abuja today. He did not state who would fund his trip but chief de mission Justine Ligyalingi said they were not taking any chances since they had not budgeted for him.
Sprinter Wabukawo joins five colleagues already set for Saturday's action.

Justin Bayiga and Annet Kabasindi will be the first in action. Bayiga will start with the 100m round one and two heats while Kabasindi will feature in the final of the women's javelin.

According to a new schedule yet to be finalised, Boniface Kiprop (10000m) and Dorcus Inzikuru (5000m) should feature in finals on Sunday, with Pascal Owor running the 800m qualifiers the same day.
Inzikuru (800m, 5000m) and Kiprop (5000m, 10000m) will attempt a double.

Meanwhile, while Ugandan boxers were sweating on Tuesday, Rwandan fighter Michel Gashumba marched into the flyweight quarterfinals while Festus Kabanda, formerly Festus Omondi with Uganda Bombers, also won his bantamweight fight by beating Eric Lendoye from Gabon on points 14-17.

The Ugandans were also undone by the out of fashion ring boots that lacked grip, leaving the pugilists fighting just to stand up because of the slippery surface.
