NURSING training schools have been urged to transform the attitude of nurses while handling patients. The Mbarara Municipality MP, John Kigyagi, said nurses needed to focus on giving medical care, instead of abusing patients.

“Nurses’ attitude is not acceptable. They need to stop being rude and abusive. Some patients leave hospitals before they recover because of bad nurses,” Kigyagi said.

Kigyagi was speaking at the students’ welcome party of Mayanja Memorial Medical Training Institute in Mbarara town on Thursday.

In November, the education ministry and Nursing Council gave the institute permission to start admitting students to undertake courses leading to the award of diplomas and certificates in Comprehensive Nursing.

Kigyagi applauded the managing director, Dr Benon Mugerwa, for starting the first nursing school in the district.

He said the school will produce professionals to reduce the shortage of health workers in the country.

Mugerwa asked the district leaders to lobby for training equipment.

“We need your support to acquire equipment to train students. The medical equipment is expensive and students’ tuition is not enough to cater for everything,” Mugerwa said, adding that the institute was not business oriented.

The mayor, Wilson Tumwine, said: “Even if the Government cannot employ you, you can be self-employed by starting your own clinics and drug shops.”
