A KAMPALA woman has defended the Police on allegations that they tortured her husband Goddy Muhumuza during an incident in 2007 in which he was forcefully taken to Butabika Hospital for a mental check-up.
Florence Kembabazi Muhumuza, a senior health educationist in the health ministry, yesterday told a parliamentary committee on the Police Force that she secured an ‘urgency order’ from Butabika Hospital on suspicion that Muhumuza had a mental disorder.
“Police never tortured Goddy; they were enforcing the order. I sought it on the advice of Dr. Margaret Mungerera. His behaviour was very suspicious,†Kembabazi said. She added: “I felt very happy when he was taken to the hospital because I knew his health would improve.â€
Appearing before the same committee, chaired by Peter Nyombi (Nakasongola) in December last year, Muhumuza accused Kembabazi of conniving with Police officers Godfrey Bangirana and Grace Turyagumanawe to kidnap him with intent to kill him.
He added that Turyagumanawe and Bangirana severely tortured him and he sustained injuries. But Kembabazi dismissed the claims.
“They had no bad intention. When I secured the order, I took it to the Police chief, Kale Kayihura, who dispatched the officers to enforce it. We wanted to improve his health,†she said.
Kembabazi, who has three children with Muhumuza, said it was wrong for the Police to re-arm her husband.
