Gulu LC5 chairman Norbert Mao has applauded the Government for honouring President Yoweri Museveni’s promise to rebuild Acholi homes.

In 2001, the President promised 30 pieces of iron sheets to each family that was leaving the internally displaced camps.

Mao was presiding over a ceremony to hand over 540 iron sheets to 18 winners last Friday at Kolo sub-county.

He said the National Resistance Movement(NRM) wanted all the people in Acholi to stop living in grass thatched huts by 2025.

He added that the iron sheets distribution programme was not politically driven and said distribution would continue even with the Government’s implementation of the Peace Recovery Development Plan for northern Uganda.

Meanwhile the Acholi have been warned against taking pictures of unfinished buildings in order to demand for the iron sheets. Initially, priority was given to those who had already started building.

The deputy resident district commissioner Milton Odongo, disclosed that 9,000 iron sheets for the district were still in the stores at Gulu Central Prison.

Odongo warned the beneficiaries against selling the iron-sheets, saying the culprits would be arrested and prosecuted.

Winners who did not receive their iron sheets will get them on January 24.

Odongo asked claimants to converge at Koro sub-county headquarters for a clean-up meeting on January 16.

“Those who will not attend the meeting will automatically miss the iron sheets the next time they are given out”, Odongo cautioned.

He asked the Acholi to support the NRM in 2011 during the general elections .

“You must support the NRM the in 2011 elections if you want more iron-sheets and enjoy infrastructure like first-class murram and tarmac roads in the Acholi region,” Odongo said.
