THE police have arrested Pastor Elijah Ssemugabi for criminal trespass.
The Pastor of Nsambya Christian Fellowship Cathedral was arrested on Saturday and detained at Mukono Police Station.
Ssemugabi’s troubles started when he tried to deliver about 184 students to All Saints College near the Mpoma satellite, but the school rejected the students.
“The school denied having any prior understanding with him,†said Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba.
It was during the standoff that followed, that the Police was called.
According to media reports, Ssemugabi is also being investigated over allegations of child trafficking.
It is said that the children were part of the 1,000, who were allegedly promised free education.
Nabakooba said the Police would also investigate Ssemugabi over other allegations ranging from obtaining money fraudulently from the children’s parents and uttering false documents.
“We want information about his operations. We are also looking into claims that he received money from parents promising to secure for their children scholarships to study abroad,†said Nabakooba.
She appealed to the parents of the stranded student to collect them.
“Let them come with proper documents for their children,†she said.
Yesterday, Ssemugabi was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) headquarters in Kampala in connection with other offences.
“The issue of criminal trespass is being handled in Mukono. At the CID, we are investigating allegations of fraudulently soliciting money from people. Six adults have already recorded statements,†said CID spokesperson Fred Enanga.
In March 2007, Ssemugabi was accused of soliciting money from parents, claiming he would get sponsorship for their children.
Ssemugabi is said to be the owner of several schools including Munyonyo Bishop Elijah High School, Kabalagala Bishop Elijah High School, Kyengera Alpha and Omega, Bishop Elijah High School Bombo, Nansana Day and Boarding Bishop Elijah High School and Mukono Bishop Elijah High School.
