Bukwo district has received 25 seed secondary schools worth $18m (about sh35bn).

A seed secondary school is constructed by the Government in sub-counties where there are no public secondary schools.

The Government builds four classrooms, an administration block, a two block science laboratory and toilet facilities. It also provides furniture for the classrooms, laboratories, administrative block and the computer room.

The construction of the schools, which started in November last year, was funded by the Government and the African Development Bank (ADB).

Speaking at the handing over ceremony at Kabei Secondary School, education minister Namirembe Bitamazire advised the beneficiaries to maintain the structures.

“It is my prayer that the standard of education in the sub-counties will be uplifted when children enroll in the schools,” said Bitamazire.

The ADB country representative, Benedict Kanu said the bank was determined to address the lack of government-aided secondary schools in the 237 sub-counties.

He said more funds would be allocated to the education sector to expand the existing schools and to construct more.

The permanent secretary of the ministry of education, Xavier Francis Lubanga, said out of the 63 schools the Government pledged to construct countrywide, 38 had been completed.

“Today marks the completion of another 25,” he noted.

He warned teachers against charging extra fees that would force the children out of schools.
