CHINESE workers have agreed to help their Ugandan counterparts to strengthen the labour movement.
The Central Organisation of Free Trade Unions (COFTU) secretary general, Dr. Sam Lyomoki, yesterday said the executive committee of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) had agreed on the cooperation during a meeting of labour leaders in China.
“There will be exchange visits among Ugandan and Chinese union leaders and workers to share experiences,†Lyomoki said.
The workers MP said mass workers’ organisations would be formed to increase the membership of trade unions and the quality of production through vocational training.
The Ugandan team visited China last month at the invitation of their Chinese counterparts.
They met the executives of the federation and leaders and workers of the Chinese Aid Centre and the Chinese Institute of Labour Relations.
ACFTU has over 250 million members compared to Uganda’s one million unionised workers.
Lyomoki said Uganda and China also agreed to exchange technical skills, information and equipment.
The Chinese, he said, donated six laptops to COFTU. Uganda’s Ambassador to China, Charles Wagidoso, urged Ugandans to work closely with the Chinese, saying they would benefit more from the cooperation because of China’s experience.
COFTU’s mission is to establish a labour movement to achieve economic and social advancement of all workers.
