A UGANDAN is one of the 25 finalists in the prestigious CNN-MultiChoice African journalist of the year award 2009.

Frederick Mugira, a freelance journalist with the South African based Mail & Guardian online is competing with journalists from 12 countries on the continent.

Among the East African countries, Kenya has six finalists while Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi have none.

Mugira is a development communication journalist and media trainer.

He works as a part-time lecturer at Bishop Barham University in Kabale district.

The chair of the independent judging panel, Azubuike Ishiekwene, announced the finalists of the competition on Wednesday.

Ishiekwene said 836 journalists from 38 countries on the continent entered the competition, adding that there was an improvement in the quality of the entries.

The winners will be announced at an award ceremony and gala evening at the International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa, on July 18.

The CNN African Journalist of the Year Award was founded in 1995 by Edward Boateng and the late Mohamed Amin to recognise and encourage excellence in journalism throughout Africa.
