THEIR coach has been emphasising they are a threat; and after defeating KIU 80-72 at YMCA on Sunday maybe Timothy Odeke’s subjective opinion of the Nkumba Marines is accurate.

When they lost by 45 points to D-Mark Power two weeks ago, it looked like the Marines were still the poor team from last year. But in a space of four days they convincingly defeated the UCU Canons and KIU - two of the biggest clubs in the MTN-FUBA men's topflight.

Though the Canons and KIU are inter university rivals whom the Marines often play, the two victories are not down to the nature of rivalries but the improvement that has been made by Odeke’s team.

“The guys have been training hard,” Odeke said after watching his charges overturn a fourth quarter deficit to down KIU.

Phillip Wakwimero and Lad Ikungura, the two pre-season signings bagged 17 and 12 points against KIU respectively.
