THE people of Tororo county on Wednesday celebrated the creation of Mukuju and Kisoko districts out of Tororo district.

They slaughtered animals and drank the whole night at various trading centers, vowing to vote for Movement candidates in the 2011 general elections.

The LC5 chairperson, Ignatius Okongo, said the expected massive support would be to thank the Government for answering their call and liberating them.

Okongo said it was not necessary for the President to campaign in the area, since the residents had resolved to thank him by supporting his fourth term.

Tororo county started asking for a district status in 1998, saying resources were not fairly allocated.

The residents demonstrated their anger by eating a live rat in front of the President at Mollo sub-county in 2005.

Three commissions of inquiries were sent to the district to investigate the boundary dispute between Tororo and Budama counties.

Both counties claimed ownership of Tororo municipality.

Okongo said President Yoweri Museveni had always had support in the county as manifested by the 2006 elections where he won most votes.

He said MP Geoffrey Ekanya (FDC) only managed to sail through after the Government had failed to grant them a district before elections.

Malaba clearing agent and business tycoon Richard Ojore will stand against Ekanya on the NRM ticket, he added.

The county LC4 chairperson, George Alfred Obore, said their quest for a district status was not tribal, but due to the need to have better service delivery at the grass-roots.
