LETTER OF THE WEEK

It is sad and shameful that Uganda continues to lose precious lives because of the backward practice of human sacrifices (ritual murders). Although the government seems to have made some efforts to curb the crime, it appears thorough research has not been done to identify the root cause of the practice.

Treating symptoms instead of dealing with cause appears to be a major problem in our country.

Even if all shrines were demolished and witchdoctors arrested, the practice is unlikely to be stamped out.

Although some witchdoctors and traditional healers seem to be the people behind the practice, we should not forget that some citizens who don’t belong to those categories are also actively involved. These are the very people who might be encouraging witchdoctors to remain in the ‘trade’.

Some people have argued that it exposure to Nigerian films locally known as ‘KiNigeria’ that is likely to be one of the causes. The practice of human sacrifice is a major warning sign that something has gone wrong in our society. Therefore, our leaders must identify and aggressively deal with it.
