FIRE has gutted Bishop Angelo Negri Boarding Primary School dormitory in Gulu district, destroying property worth millions of shillings.

The 1:00pm fire broke out in St. Martin dormitory on Wednesday when the pupils were out for lunch. No pupil was hurt.

Parents flocked to the school immediately to check on their children after news about the fire spread in the area.

The Police fire brigade responded promptly and put out the fire before it spread to other parts of the school.

The head teacher, Bro. Santo Okema, said the fire could have been started by an electric short circuit.

“The dormitory housed pupils of Primary One to Four. We shall send them back home as they were left with only one examination paper to do, which we will give them later,” Okema said.

He said the part of the dormitory that got burnt was also used as a store for unused beds.

The northern regional Police spokesman, Johnson Kilama, said the Police would investigate the incident and urged parents to remain calm.

“School fires are not common in northern Uganda,” he said.

There was one school fire in 2006 at Sacred Heart Girls Secondary School and another in 2008 when St. Joseph’s College Layibi was burnt during a student riot.
