Government builds cattle market in Luweero

THE Government has constructed a modern cattle market in Kamira sub-county in Luweero. Animal husbandry state minister Bright Rwamirama said this was aimed at modernising and commercialising the meat industry.

THE Government has constructed a modern cattle market in Kamira sub-county in Luweero. Animal husbandry state minister Bright Rwamirama said this was aimed at modernising and commercialising the meat industry.
He added that the market would cost Government about sh700m. Rwamirama was speaking at the handing over of a new slaughter shed to the Luweero town authorities recently.
He emphasised the need for the farmers to improve on hygiene. The officials asked the minister to shift the construction of the modern abattoir from Nakaseke to Luweero, arguing that the district was strategically located, with piped water, electricity and had acquired 25 acres of land.
Rwamirama said the government planned to construct four more abattoirs in different parts of the country. He said the Government had also committed funds to construct more valley dams in Luweero which will enable constant supply of water to animals, especially during droughts.
“Farmers will also be taught how to store grass for their animals,†he added. The minister also revealed that a shoe factory would be constructed to utilise the hides and skins that would be produced.
The district leaders welcomed the Government plan, saying it was one of the ways through which the Government was paying back the people of Luweero. The district was used as the base for the five-year bush war that brought the NRM government into power.
Luweero has over 10,000 ranchers with over 50,000 heads of cattle.
