CHOLERA has hit Kampala suburbs, killing two, officials said yesterday. Dozens of others have been admitted at the city council’s cholera clinic at Mulago Hospital.

The disease recently killed four inmates in Kabasanda Prison in the neighbouring Mpigi district.

In Kampala, the most affected suburbs are Namuwongo in Bukasa parish, said Dr. Joseph Ssenzoga, the city council health official.

He said several other city suburbs had been attacked. In Makindye Division, he said, Kisugu and Kibuli were affected. In Nakawa Division, Naguru and Kamwokya, while Namirembe, Bakuli, Nalukolongo and Nateete in Rubaga Division have reported cases.

Dr. Ssenzoga said officials had been deployed to sensitise the public.
As a measure to control the outbreak, residents have been urged to observe hygiene, drink safe water and avoid food items sold on roadsides.

Accordingly, authorities have banned sale of food and fruit juice on the roadsides and in the markets of Kanyogoga-Soweto zone in Namuwongo.

Emmanuel Masengere, the LC1 chief of Kanyogoga zone in Bukasa parish, attributed the fresh outbreak to poor drainage.

“The situation may get worse if the rains continue,” he said. “We have done our best to sensitise residents on hygiene, but we still need help to manage drainage channels.”

He also blamed residents for failing to dig pit-latrines.

The head of Makindye Division, Godfrey Kalungi, also blamed the residents, and accused them of defecating in polythene bags and disposing them of in Nakivubo channel. As a control measure, Kalungi said, houses without pit latrines will be demolished.

He also said the division had resolved to “evict encroachers on Nakivubo channel”.
