Actress Mackenzie Phillips recently revealed in a tell-all memoir, Papa John, that she had a long-term incestuous affair with her father, musician John Philips, who also introduced her to cocaine.
The 49-year-old former child star and daughter of the 1960’s super-group, the Mamas and the Papas founder, John Phillips, says she has had sex with her father since 1978, when she was still a teen. But their sexual relationship became consensual as her life began to spiral out of control, she says. They had sex often, including the night before she was to marry Jeff Sessler, a member of the Rolling Stones entourage, in 1979.
She told The Oprah Winfrey Show that she has kept the secret for 31 years. John died in 2001 after a lifelong battle with drugs and alcohol. But Mackenzie writes that she forgave him when he was on his deathbed. “I would not be the woman I am, had I not been your daughter,†she says she told him. “So, I want you to know that I forgive you and I love you very, very much.â€
Phillips’ career as an actress took off when, as a teen, she performed the role of Carol Morrison in the 1973 film American Graffiti. In the late 1990s, her career experienced a revival when she began co-starring on So Weird, a Disney production.
She has led a troubled life that has included substance and drug abuse. Incest is sexual activity between close relatives. It is criminal and an impediment to marriage in most countries, religions and cultures.
In Uganda, incest cases have rocked the public, including the infamous banker, whose P. 3 daughter spilled the beans after hearing about another Wobulenzi guy who was also arrested for a similar case. A vet doctor was arrested when his daughter just got tired of aborting her father’s children and reported the matter.
Moses Ssemakula of community affairs and family protection at the Police, says when the culprit is the bread winner, families don’t want to pursue the case. He says step-parents and guardians are the most implicated.
Many girls face the problem in silence, especially with dads who are step, foster, drunkards or drug users. Others do it with older relatives in situations of too much freedom, pornography and lack of parental guidance. It can cause psychological torture and lead to drug use. Victims are encouraged to approach their community, religious and cultural leaders or policemen in the family protection unit.
