Dear Doctor,
My wife has been using the pill to prevent pregnancy for three years. Last August, she conceived while on the pill and now she is ill. We are worried that we may get a baby with abnormalities because of these complications. Should we plan for an abortion?

Dear Amisi,
IT is very impressive that you are interested in your wife’s well-being and efforts to plan your family well. The pill is the most widely used contraceptive method and it is almost 99.9% effective if used correctly.

This means that there is a small chance of becoming pregnant on the pill. However, sometimes women using the pill do not to take it at the required moment.

The effectiveness of the pill is maximised if it is swallowed around the same time everyday. The effectiveness of the pill can also be reduced by the concurrent use of some drugs including antibiotics.

These drugs reduce the concentration of the pill in the blood making pregnancy more likely. It is a good thing that the two of you have embraced the pregnancy.

It is not advisable to continue taking the pill after a confirmed pregnancy. A woman’s wellbeing varies from one pregnancy to another.

Your wife’s current state is most probably not related to the pills. There is a very big chance that she is going to have a healthy baby.

You can have an ultrasound scan done to look at the baby. All the best.
