UPC’s Otunnu returns via Busia

FORMER UN diplomat vying to lead the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Olara Otunnu returned to the country on Monday through Busia in eastern Uganda.

FORMER UN diplomat vying to lead the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Olara Otunnu returned to the country on Monday through Busia in eastern Uganda.
Addressing supporters at Madibira Primary School in Busia town on Monday, Otunnu said Ugandans should be brave to get rid of misery, suffering, poverty and oppression.
Otunnu was received by district UPC chairpersons and Alex Maloba Sirondo, the man who reportedly opened the border gate for the late president Dr. Milton Obote in 1985 when he was fleeing the country.
Otunnu said fear had deprived Ugandans of the power to shape their destiny, adding that most Ugandans were living like squatters.
“Those that have cast away fear elsewhere in the world have triumphed.â€
Otunnu added that fear, was stopping Ugandans from winning back leadership from the National Resistance Movement.
He, however, added that standing against oppression did not mean using arms.
Otunnu said UPC was a party that is inclusive and appealed to the party supporters to ‘walk with their heads high’ because they are the future of the country.
He argued that the two decades of the NRM Government represent a dramatic drop in the quality of life in Uganda.
He said people were not able to give their children quality education because their income had gone down.
He added that the roads were bad and health facilities lacked drugs.
“UPC needs to take over leadership. It is a party of progress, seeking to unite all Ugandans through its nationalistic programmes.â€
Before addressing the crowd, Otunnu asked his supporters to observe a minute of silence to remember “compatriots†killed during the September riots in Kampala.
The riots broke out when the Katikkiro of Buganda was blocked from going to Kayunga to prepare for the Kababa’s visit to the area.
