THE UPDF has deployed along the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo border following reports that suspected Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels were hiding in the West Nile region.
The army said there was panic in the sub-counties along the border as reports spread that the rebels had infiltrated the area.

The regional army public relations officer, Capt. Peter Mugisa, said the border had been secured and they were monitoring the situation.
“In all our areas of responsibility from Zombo to Adjumani, we are monitoring the situation and have deployed in all the corners where we suspect there could be a problem,” he said.

Mugisa told The New Vision on Tuesday that there were reports that suspected LRA rebels were hiding along the border with the DR Congo in Adumi and Odramachaku sub-counties in Arua district.
“I would like to build confidence and give hope to the people in these sub-counties that we are in control of the border against any intrusion,” he said.
“However, they should know that the LRA is thousands of miles away from us but should be conscious of armed thugs who would like to steal during this Christmas season.”

Mugisa said the region has many illegal guns and urged the residents to be security-conscious.
“We are not going to be in all corners of the border so everybody should take personal security seriously. Know when to travel and lock your doors, which is not our duty. Do not leave your homes without protection because they may be broken into,” he advised.

Mugisa cautioned residents to be careful with armed strangers and report them immediately.

Last week, a businessman from Moyo district was robbed, shot and injured in Yumbe district by unidentified gunmen.

The attack came two weeks after a gang raided a Police post in Ndirindiri in Moyo district and stole three guns and 90 bullets.
