FASHION is a revolution; trends come and go. This year has been ushered in with a new collection of clothing and accessories.Titus Serunjogi spoke with some fashion designers about what is in vogue

Harriet Kiganda, proprietor of Cinci Company Lady Fashion Stores
Clothes that bring back memories of the 1970s are in vogue. The features include
Dresses and tops that cover one shoulder while leaving the other bare as well as bubble dresses have made a come-back. Evening dresses with sequins, glass beads or semi-precious stones are also in.

Deep-purple clothes (thanks to Michelle Obama), bright hues like orange, electric blue, lemon green and scarlet are the shades for 2009.

Stilettos are back in full swing. The higher the heel, the better, but the shoes must be peep-toe or pointed at the front. Closed, round-toe shoes with a thick sole are out of fashion.

The 1970s Afro (big hair) is the hairstyle of the year. But big hair wigs as well as small handbags are not 2009 material.

Faith Asiimwe, Faith Fashion Label
She says shirt-dresses, big belts, skinny jeans, thigh-high ladies’ boots, oversize handbags and fitting men’s leather coats are the in-thing.

This year is also about metallic accessories and shades. So the trendiest T-shirts and jeans are those with a touch of silver, gold, bronze or copper. Metallic eye-shadow is also set to make its mark this year.

Faded, dirty or threadbare jeans are back. Clashing, vibrant colours are also the in-thing; for instance a pink top can be worn with orange or green pants. The shoes can also have different colours on the straps and heels.

Items considered to be out of fashion include; tops that expose the midriff (kundi-show) and hipsters (low-cut jeans). Others are see-through clothes, hot pants, body-hugging miniskirts, hooded sweaters and quarter jackets (those that fall just below the elbows).

Robert Ahimbisibwe, proprietor of Select Garments Stores
This year, men are into bright-coloured shirts like pink, lemon green and orange, cufflinks, short and wide multi-coloured ties, wide-collar and double-sleeved shirts are also in vogue.

Trousers without pleats trendy. Shoes that are wide at the toes with a buckle instead of shoelaces are the way to go this year. The more tight-fitting the suit, the more fashionable.

Better still, the suit should have a slit at the back. Short-sleeved suits aka Kaunda, as well as trousers with a turn-up, are old-fashioned.

Dorothy Lubega, fashion designer
Trendy style comprises a combination of three or more bright colours, so florals and African prints are in vogue.
The jewellery, especially necklaces, bangles and rings must stand out.

Men’s outfits with big chequered patterns (or squares), especially in black and white, are on demand. Men’s coats with a silver pattern have also topped the trends this year.

Daphne Kyaligonza, creative designer for Kyaligonza Fashion House
Canvas shoes with a brush of silver or bling (shiny metal) are stylish, while leather jackets with patches of rubber and suede are trendy.

For ladies, a hot pink outfit is a must-have. Tops and evening dresses that leave the back open are also in vogue. But micro miniskirts and body-hugging dresses are out of fashion.

Stella Atal, designer
Dress-tops, body socks, leggings, high-slit long skirts, ballet shoes and handbags made out of genuine camel leather are in vogue. Suede has also made a comeback and so have accessories made out of reptile skin.
Afro, cornrows and dreadlocks are the way to go.

Short leggings, bell-bottom trousers, African sandals and kangaroo caps are out-dated.

Liz Twikiriize, creative designer for Kahoma Fashion Label
This year is about glorifying nature. Hides, alligator skin, camel leather and metal decorations are also trendy. Copper has also taken over gold and silver.

Big necklaces, earrings and bracelets made from semi-precious stones, corals and shells are stylish.

Belts in vogue include those made out of horns, bones and coconut shells.
Plastic bracelets and synthetic leather are out of fashion.
