EDITOR—I have been following the infighting within the Muslim community in Uganda with keen interest.

Muslims have been divided into two factions each subscribing to its own leader (Mufti) and attached to either Kibuli or Old Kampala. What a mess! It was very shameful in the first place that Muslims chose to sort out their problems through civil courts of law.

It was demeaning for a head of a religious group to stand in the dock, before a civil judge as if the Muslim institution has no structures to resolve their problems internally. It was an act of disrepute, whose dividends were nothing but a tarnished name of Islam and a mockery of Allah.

Religion is different from politics.
If ever there was a need to sell Muslim’s property, this issue should have been announced highlighting the actual cost and what the money would be used for.

In most cases, the proceeds would have to be pooled back into things like renovating Muslim property or paying employees or construction of public utilities. Because there was no such accountability, the Islamic community has been torn apart.
