ARUA Municipality MP Hussein Akbar Godi, in detention over his estranged wife’s murder, yesterday applied for bail, citing grave illness.

Godi, represented by Sam Njuba, however, did not mention the illness he suffered from.

Justice Patrick Tabaro further remanded Godi until Monday when he would give his ruling.

Godi is accused of murdering his wife, Rehema Caesar Nasur, at Lugojja village in Mukono district on December 4, 2008.

According to the Police, Rehema was shot dead on Mukono - Kayunga road and her body dumped near Mpoma satellite. So far only Godi has been charged in connection with the murder.

Godi, who swore an affidavit, said he also needed the bail because the people of Arua Municipality were being denied representation in Parliament.

In the affidavits, he also stated that he had eight orphaned dependants who would suffer more if he was detained any longer.

Njuba said Godi promised not to interfere with the ongoing investigations and would not also interfere with the witnesses, saying he does not know them.

State Attorney Alice Komuhangi opposed the bail application, saying Godi was likely to interfere with witnesses because of the influence he had by virtue of being an MP.

Komuhangi told court that a number of state witnesses expressed fear that Godi would harass them if he was released on bail.

James Kyomukama, the investigating Police officer in the case, also told court that Godi was likely to jeopardise inquiries.

Retired Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu and MPs Reagan Okumu and Francis Epetait stood as Godi’s sureties.
